This year Bradford Literature Festival is excited to announce the launch of a dedicated Comics and Manga weekend at the University of Bradford!
BLF Comic Con will combine the customary convention set up with unique and specially curated events, to create a comics extravaganza, exploring traditions from around the world as well as manga, graphic novels, science fiction and gaming.
BLF Comic Con will include an ‘Artists Alley’, where visitors will have a chance to meet the authors, artists and comic creators behind some of the most innovative and exciting comics around, from the well known and best loved, to the up-and-coming. It will also play host to a spectacular market place, where fans can browse the latest merchandise and must-have collectables.
We are delighted to announce that some of the UK’s most talented comics artists, writers and producers will take part in this year’s Comic Con weekend! Here are just some of the amazing people joining us this year:
Chris Haughton – A designer and children’s book author, Chris’s work has been translated into 20 languages and has won awards in 7 countries. Now, Chris will bring his stunning characters to life in an amazing virtual reality treat for the senses!
Olivier Kruger – Creator of the beautiful and moving ‘An Illustrated documentation of a Week in Laos with an Elephant Doctor’, Olivier has drawn for The Guardian, Süddeutsche Zeitung, GQ , The New York Times, and The New Yorker.
Zainab Akhtar – Creator of Comics&Cola and curator of ShortBox. Zainab Akhtar is a freelance writer and professional librarian who has written for The Guardian, The AV Club, Publisher’s Weekly, Forbidden Planet, The Beat, Comics Alliance, and The Comics Journal. Eisner-nominated for Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism.
JAKe – Illustrator, designer, graphic artist and animation Director. Co creator of ‘Hellraisers’, a graphic novel published by Self Made Hero, and illustrator of ‘How To Speak Wookiee’ and ‘How To Speak Droid with R2-D2’ for Chronicle Books/ Lucasfilm Ltd.
Gareth Brookes – A graphic novelist, print maker, textile artist, small press publisher and enthusiastic home brewer. Gareth makes weird, humorous and experimental graphic novels and handmade comics utilizing unusual materials such as embroidery, pressed flowers and fire.
Hannah Berry – mostly makes comics, but is also a writer, illustrator and podcaster. Her work has been published in the USA, Italy, Holland, France and Serbia. She currently does a weekly cartoon strip for the New Statesman – ‘Vox Pop’ – about humans and how funny they are.
Madius Comics – Independent creators and publishers of weird and wonderful comics designed to delight, disgust and distract you from modern living. Home of 50 Signal (Nick Gonzo), Papercuts and Inkstains, Funk Soul Samurai, The Kings Leap, Average Joe (Robin Jones) and Ramlock Investigates.
Flintlock & Time Bomb Comics – British comics company that only publishes one-shots and graphic novels. From historical horror to mind-bending science-fiction each release is a complete story by talented creators. Known for the Flintlock Series, written and conceived by Steve Tanner, featuring the incredible artistic talents of Anthony Summey, Lorenzo Nicoletta and Ed Machiavello.
Kelly Angel – Comics producer from the North of England. Creator of ‘Anything About Nothing’ series; fun, observational comics, prints, posters and unique art work.
Eleanor Hollindrake – Artist, prop maker, illustrator and writer. ‘The Adventures of Dragon Mouse’ & ‘The Magical Mythical Mice’ comics aimed at children.
Kate Ashwin – Creator of ‘Widdershins’ is a series of Victorian-era adventure stories, set in the fictional town of Widdershins, West Yorkshire- England’s magical epicentre, home to bounty hunters, failed wizards, stage magicians, and more, besides.
Liam ‘Pais’ Hill – Creator of the webcomic ‘Highgreen Dawn’ about a couple of losers still trying to make it in music long after the apocalypse, and the ‘Slug Cafe’ comic series.
Cat Byrne – Creator of ‘Mizzle’ comics about the runt of a litter of superhero cats. She also creates her own unique artworks and prints.
Tom Burleigh – Author of ‘The troubles of Magnet Boy & other gloomy tales’, Tom writes illustrated short story poems and has produced several comics in collaboration with Cat Byrne.
Sophie Wright – Produces comics, prints and zines about self-care & mental wellbeing, through to topics of love, friendship and daily life.
Abi Watson – Creates character driven short comics, prints and fan art.
