Photographer Derek D Souza was just 22 years old when he got the call from Paul Weller’s mum to go and photograph his favourite band for their next single ‘Absolute Beginners’. It was 1981 and The Jam were at their height and for Derek, who had spent years hustling his way into gigs to take pictures of the band, it was a dream come true.
Over the last 40 years he has shot thousands of images of The Jam, The Style Council and Paul Weller one of which is now in The National Portrait Gallery. His work has been published in numerous books, magazines and record sleeves and has been featured in a number of major exhibitions. He has also published two sold-out books: ‘In The Crowd Images of The Jam’ in 2013 and ‘In Echoed Steps, The Jam and a Vision Of Albion,’ in August 2017.
