Secondary Education Programme

Every summer term BLF’s Education Programme offers a week of eye-opening talks, workshops, and interactive experiences, free to all non-fee-paying schools. These events promote curiosity and support developing students into well-rounded and open-minded individuals. Designed to uplift and support the secondary curriculum, from Shakespeare to Civil Rights. 

Our Education Programme is bigger and better than ever, offering an opportunity for students to engage with amazing, life-changing literature in all forms from poetry to big ideas. Our 2025 programme will run from Friday 27 June to Friday 4 July 2025. Our themes include Shakespeare, World War Two and the Holocaust, Classic Literature, Malcolm X and Civil Rights, and more!

Classic Fiction Everyone Should Read

Key Stage 3 and 4 English Literature

Gain a deeper appreciation of four iconic novels that still resonate today, all celebrating milestones in 2025. As we mark 250 years since Jane Austen’s birth, explore love and class in 19th-century England in Pride and Prejudice. Unravel the moral complexities in J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, marking 80 years since it was first performed, where the mysterious Inspector Goole examines the web of responsibility in a tragic death.

Experience the glamour and tragedy of the Jazz Age in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, turning 100, before confronting power and propaganda in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, 80 years since publication.

Malcolm X and the Civil Rights Movement

Dive into a day of inspiration to celebrate Malcolm X’s 100th birthday and the enduring impact of the American Civil Rights Movement. Through expert talks, students will uncover the historical context of civil rights activism, exploring key figures and pivotal moments. They will learn about Malcolm X’s journey from his tumultuous youth to his legacy as a champion for Black empowerment and social justice, examining the enduring relevance of his work in today’s society.

The day will also highlight the evolution of race relations, connecting historical struggles to contemporary movements, including Black Lives Matter. Conclude the day with a poetry workshop, crafting artistic responses to themes of activism and anti-racism.

Shaking Up Shakespeare

The Gothic

Step into the shadowy realm of Gothic literature as we explore its enduring appeal in modern culture – from Victorian stately homes and mysterious figures to the trending #gothlit on TikTok.

Students will examine the evolution of Gothic themes, including the legendary rivalry between vampires and werewolves, unpacking their significance in folklore and contemporary narratives. The moors that inspired literary greats like Emily Brontë will serve as a backdrop to discussions on setting and atmosphere, emphasising how place shapes Gothic storytelling. Students will also unleash their creativity in a hands-on workshop, crafting their own immersive Gothic worlds.

Performance Poetry

Immerse students in the vibrant world of poetry with direct access to today’s most exciting and innovative poets as they bring their verses to life. Through performances, workshops, and masterclasses, students will explore different styles, experiment with rhyme and rhythm, experience the electrifying influence of hip-hop, and engage with themes like activism as they learn to craft powerful stories through verse.

Expect impassioned and inspirational lyrical stylings as we push the boundaries of poetry and remix the genre.

World War Two and the Holocaust

Commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two as we delve into its complexities and the haunting legacy of the Holocaust.

Through expert talks and diverse perspectives, students will explore pivotal events, including Hitler’s rise and the global impact of the war, highlighting the contributions of millions, including Indian soldiers. They’ll confront the chilling realities of the Holocaust, examining the conditions that enabled such atrocities while engaging in critical discussions about modern parallels. Personal stories, like Anne Frank’s poignant diary and the Kindertransport program’s impact in Yorkshire, will illuminate the struggles of those seeking refuge.

Event Locations and Transport

Key Stage 3 & 4 (Secondary) events will take place at St.George’s Hall, Bradford.

Please note, schools are responsible for arranging their own transport.

Event Schedule

Themed days run from 10:00 to 14:15, with arrival from 09:30. Each day includes four 45-minute sessions, with short breaks in between and a 45-minute lunch break.

Lunch Arrangements

Students should bring a packed lunch, as no food is available for purchase on-site. Lunch breaks will be held in outdoor spaces near the venues, including the University of Bradford, City Park, and outside Bradford Crown Court. In case of severe weather, alternative arrangements will be made.

Booking Information

You are welcome to bring as many students as you’d like, whether it’s a class or an entire year group. You can also bring students on multiple days. By booking, you are committing to a full event day (four sessions).

Tickets are required for all attendees (students and staff). A Lead Teacher ticket is needed for each booking, which includes your school’s details. Additional staff should be booked using Additional Staff tickets.

No tickets or QR codes are needed on the day. At registration, simply provide your school name and event details to check in.

To ensure a smooth booking process, please obtain senior leadership approval and confirm transport arrangements before making your reservation. This helps avoid last-minute cancellations due to unavailable transport, unexpected costs, or staffing issues. By taking these steps in advance, you can help us prevent administrative challenges and reduce wasted tickets. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

An event I want to book is sold out – can I join a waiting list?

Yes, if an event is sold out you will see the option to join a waiting list. For our Secondary Key Stage 3 & 4 events, if we receive a cancellation suitable for the size of your school group we will be in touch to confirm your booking.

Visitor Pack

After your booking is confirmed, we will send a visitor pack with practical details, including parking and risk assessment information. A detailed itinerary, including the day’s events and participating artists, will be sent closer to the event date.

First Aid Provision

A first aider will be available at all event sites throughout the day.

Access Requirements and Seating Information

If any of your students have specific access needs (e.g., sensory processing, physical accommodations, visual or hearing support), please let us know in advance so we can provide appropriate resources. To discuss access needs, contact us at [email protected].

Seating is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with school groups seated together. If a student needs a break, quiet spaces are available. Students may take time out as needed, but must be supervised by a staff member.

Cancellation Policy

We are pleased to offer our events free of charge to non-fee-paying schools and home educators across Yorkshire. However, organising these events incurs significant costs. If you need to amend or cancel your booking, please inform us as early as possible.

Cancellations made after Friday 7 March 2025 will incur a charge of £10 per pupil per event. We understand that exceptional circumstances may arise and are happy to work with you to find a suitable solution.
