Every summer term BLF’s Education Programme offers a week of eye-opening talks, workshops, and interactive experiences, free to all non-fee-paying schools. These events promote curiosity and support developing students into well-rounded and open-minded individuals. Designed to uplift and support the secondary curriculum, from Shakespeare to Climate Change. 

Our 2024 Education Programme is even bigger and better than ever, offering an opportunity for students to engage with amazing, life-changing literature in all forms from poetry to big ideas.

The Gothic

Friday 28 June, St George’s Hall

Step into the shadowy realm of Gothic literature as we explore haunting landscapes and the macabre. Explore the dark secrets and psychological depths in influential texts and contemporary fiction with sinister settings, mysterious characters, supernatural occurrences and unforeseen twists.

Featuring expert insights into the cultural and historical contexts that birthed tales of suspense and horror, Gothic Day provides an overview of genre conventions, tropes, settings and character archetypes, as well as its influence in art, media and contemporary culture.

Climate Change: From science to solutions

Tuesday 2 July, St George’s Hall

An exploration into the heart of one of the most pressing challenges of our time, intertwining science, activism, and imagination to unravel the complexities of climate-related issues. 

We will demystify the science behind climate change as we explore key concepts and their impact on ecosystems; learn practical ways to engage in climate action and discover the power of your voice in the fight against climate change; and step into the realm of dystopic fiction where the consequences of climate change unfold in vivid narratives.

Shaking Up Shakespeare

Wednesday 3 July, St George’s Hall

Shakespeare isn’t meant to be read; it was written be performed. This series of interactive talks, workshops and performances will plunge you into the thrilling world of drama and bring the bard’s plays to life. From thinking about Shakespeare’s use of language to reflecting on the historical context of his work. This is a chance for students to connect with his universal and timeless themes of love, jealousy, power, betrayal, and the human condition, and deepen their understanding of his literary canon and enduring legacy.

Performance Poetry

Thursday 4 July, St George’s Hall

An opportunity to immerse students in the universal language of poetry through direct, first-hand access to some of the most exciting and innovative poets of our time, each bringing a unique flair to the stage.

Through performances, workshops and masterclasses which bridge the gap between centuries-old verses and contemporary beats, student will explore the elegance of Shakespeare’s sonnets and the visionary mysticism of William Blake; enjoy the electrifying beats and rhythms of hip-hop, and poetry in translation from diverse cultures. Expect impassioned, inspirational lyrical styling as we push the boundaries of poetry and re-mix the genre.

Stand Up and Be Counted: How to change the world

Friday 5 July, St George’s Hall

Become a changemaker and unleash the power of your voice as you learn from motivational speakers and activists how you can make a difference in your school, community and beyond. 

Delve into the history of activism, with inspiring stories of individuals who have shaped societies through their unwavering commitment to social justice. Learn how books like George Orwell’s 1984 serve as a powerful tool for activism. From public speaking to storytelling, learn to effectively communicate your ideas and inspire action.

Additional Information

Venue and Timings

The Secondary Key Stage 3 and 4 events will take place at St. George’s Hall, Bradford. All events run from 10:00 – 14:15 (arrival from 09:30) and include a 45 minute lunch break.

Tickets

One Lead Teacher ticket is required per booking. This constitutes one staff ticket and provides us with your school’s details. Tickets for additional staff should be booked as Additional Staff tickets. There is no need to download tickets or QR codes since these are not required on the day. You will be asked for the name of school and the events you have booked on to on the day to access your event. If you have any questions please contact us at [email protected].

Lunch

Students should bring a packed lunch as there are no facilities to buy lunch on site. Lunch breaks will take place in the outdoor spaces surrounding the venue including City Park and outside Bradford Crown Court, unless there is severe weather.

Accessibility

Please inform us if any of your students have specific access requirements, such as sensory processing needs, physical accommodations, visual or hearing impairment support or any other specific needs. Cancellation Policy

We are delighted to offer our events to schools and home educators across Yorkshire free of charge for non-fee-paying schools. However, Bradford Literature Festival incurs significant costs to organise and run these events. Therefore, if you need to amend or make a cancellation, please let us know as soon as possible. Any cancellations after 30 April 2024 will incur a cost of £10 per pupil per event. This is to ensure as many young people as possible are able to attend. We understand that there may be exceptional circumstances beyond your control, and are always happy to work with you to find a solution that meets everyone’s needs.

Further Information

Once your booking has been checked, you will be sent an attendance pack which outlines practical details of your visit such as parking, lunchtime arrangements and information for risk assessment. A detailed itinerary will be sent including details of the day’s events and the artists taking part closer to the date.
