OLHA ZHYDETSKA

Olha Zhydetska

Olha Zhydetska is a Ukrainian artist and community organiser originally from Kyiv. Before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Olha worked as a TV journalist, covering international and cultural events. She came to the UK as a refugee with her daughters and mother, and now lives in Haworth, West Yorkshire.
Art, especially traditional Ukrainian painting, has always been her passion and became a way to cope with the trauma of forced displacement. Olha specialises in Petrykivka art, a vibrant folk painting style that originated in the 18th century in central Ukraine. Recognised by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, Petrykivka is known for its delicate floral patterns and deep symbolism. In Keighley, Olha founded the community project Making Bridges, which brings together Ukrainian craftswomen and artists, promoting cultural exchange and connection through traditional arts. The project aims to build understanding and unity between local communities through creativity, heritage, and shared experiences.
