Our annual international mushaira, hosted in partnership with the Yorkshire Adabee Forum, has been mesmerising and delighting festival audiences since the very beginning.

A beloved part of North Indian, Pakistani and Deccan culture for over three centuries, the mushaira is an intellectual forum, showcasing the most talented and innovative Urdu-speaking poets. This year, from the comfort of your own home, explore the rich cultural heritage of the Urdu language with the brightest stars of Urdu poetry.

This event features Ambareen Haseeb Ambar, Hameeda Shaheen and Tehzeeb Hafi from Pakistan, Tahir Faraz from India, Atif Tauqeer from Germany and Ghazal Ansari and Ishtiaq Mir from the UK.

About The Poets

Tahir Faraz

Tahir Faraz, also known as Intikhab Husain, was born in the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh in 1953. A ghazal poet, he has been carrying on the legacy of ghazal for the last forty years and spreading it all over the globe. Tahrir is a poet who takes his listeners on a rollercoaster of emotions when he recites his ghazals, nazms & geets. His soft compositions (Tarannum) during ghazal recitals make him unique from others.

Dr Ambareen Haseeb Ambar

Dr Ambareen Haseeb Ambar is a renowned poet and critic, TV anchor and analyst. She has written five books, including the recently published Tum Bi Na, and is also editor of book series Asaleeb. She has received numerous awards including The Parveen Shakir Trust’s Aks-e-Khusboo Award and the UBL Literary Award.

Mehjabeen Ghazal Ansari

Mehjabeen Ghazal Ansari is a notable Urdu poet, widely published in her mother tongue. She recites her poetry in traditional melodious tarannum style. She is founder of the Yorkshire Adabee Forum, which promotes literature in the Urdu language.

Hameeda Shaheen

Hameeda Shaheen was born in Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. Her Urdu ghazals have a style and diction characteristic of her world view.

Atif Tauqeer

Atif Tauqeer is a journalist working with Deutsche Welle Radio. His Urdu poetry, which has been published in several collections, is often charged with frustration at the political situation in his home country of Pakistan. He is currently working on his first English novel.

Sajjad Ali Ashar

Sajjad Ali Ashar is an entrepreneur who runs a digital agency and production house. He writes poetry, short stories, humour, columns, songs and articles on digital marketing. His has published two books of poetry, Madawa and Ramz, and a life philosophy, Ankahi.

Ishtiaq Mir

Ishtiaq Mir is a poet and author. He is also one of the six founding members of the Yorkshire Adabee Forum, an organisation that focuses on organising literary events and activities in Urdu as well as incorporating other languages.

Tehzeeb Hafi

Tehzeeb Hafi is a prominent young poet whose modern take on Urdu poetry has earned him a huge Facebook and YouTube following amongst young people. He did his MA in Urdu from Bahawalpur University after doing software engineering from Mehran University, and is now based in Lahore.
