Join writers and journalists Shahed Ezaydi, Samia Rahman, Remona Aly and Sabbiyah Pervez for a vital conversation exploring the experiences of Muslim women in the media today.
From newsroom representation to public perception, the panel will discuss how Muslim women navigate an industry often shaped by bias, underrepresentation, and sensationalism. Drawing on their work across journalism, publishing, and broadcasting, they will reflect on the challenges they’ve faced, the stories they want to tell, and the importance of creating space for authentic voices.
This empowering event highlights the need for greater visibility, nuance, and inclusion in the media landscape.
About the Chair
Remona Aly
Remona Aly is a journalist and broadcaster. She writes for The Guardian, is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 2’s Pause for Thought and a presenter on BBC Radio 4’s Something Understood. She is also an editor and podcast host for various platforms.
About the Authors
Samia Rahman
Samia Rahman is a writer, scholar and journalist, whose research focuses on Muslim women, patriarchy and structures of power. She is the author of Muslim Women and Misogyny: Myths and Misunderstandings in 2024 and in 2025 wrote the Centre for Media Monitoring’s report on Muslim Women working in UK media. The former director of the Muslim Institute and former deputy editor of the quarterly Critical Muslim, she is studying for a PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Shahed Ezaydi
Shahed Ezaydi is a writer and editor, specialising in features and reporting on culture, social issues and feminism. Formerly an editor at Bustle and a staff writer at Stylist Magazine, Ezaydi now freelances for a range of publications, including Glamour, Dazed and Service95. Ezaydi is also the author of The Othered Woman: How White Feminism Harms Muslim Women, which is her debut book.
Sabbiyah Pervez
Sabbiyah Pervez is an Investigations Reporter for BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire with over 10 years experience in broadcasting. During this time she’s uncovered and exposed several exclusive stories including medical negligence at Bradford Royal Infirmary, the malpractice of witch doctors and more recently a deep dive into domestic homicide reviews. Sabbiyah also has a track record of working with under represented communities across Yorkshire, gaining their trust to amplify their voices. During her time at the BBC, Sabbiyah has also worked for BBC Panorama and is a passionate advocate of responsible and ethical journalism.
