Bradford Literature Festival Opens Applications for Community Access Codes

Bradford Literature Festival has opened annual applications for its Community Access Code scheme, offering free tickets to ensure literature and culture remain accessible to everyone.

The initiative is a key part of the festival’s Ethical Ticketing Policy and has been central to its mission since launching in 2014. It enables people who might not otherwise be able to attend to take part in the festival.

Community Access Codes are available to grassroots organisations, community networks, cultural and faith groups, learning groups and support services across Bradford, Yorkshire and the North of England. Previous participants have ranged from small book clubs with fewer than 10 members to neighbourhood networks of more than 150 people.

In 2025, 120 community groups used the scheme. Many groups return each year, citing the programme as their main route into the festival.

A Community Access Code user praised the scheme, saying: “I really appreciate the festival’s approach to engaging community groups. It is really important and really so wonderful to see. It really makes the festival accessible to so many who wouldn’t otherwise access many of the events.”

Syima Aslam, CEO and Artistic Director at BLF, said, “Our Community Access Codes offer more than just a free ticket; they are an open invitation to those who have historically felt that ‘culture’ wasn’t meant for them. By removing the financial barrier, we’re able to make sure that the transformative power of literature belongs to the entire community, not just those who can afford it.”

Community groups looking to access the scheme can apply now by visiting: www.bradfordlitfest.co.uk/concessions. Successful groups will be emailed a code allowing them to book tickets for the festival, which takes place 3 – 12 July.

Sign up to email alerts by visiting www.bradfordlitfest.co.uk to be the first to see the festival programme and book tickets when it launches later this spring.
