Description

To accompany the exhibition Jameel Prize: Moving Images on display at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery (23 May – 17 August). 

Four speakers, including architect, author and academic Shahed Saleem and artists Êvar Hussayni and Soraya Syed speak to curators Daniel Lowe (Arabic Collections, British Library) and Jill Iredale (Bradford District Museums & Galleries) on the contemporary influences of Islamic art and architecture. 

The day concludes with a workshop for participants with artist and activist Sofia Karim. 

A light lunch and viewing of the exhibition are included. 

About the Speakers

Jill Iredale

Jill Iredale

Jill Iredale is a Curator at Bradford District Museums & Galleries. She has created numerous exhibitions with Bradford’s public collection of works by David Hockney, including the David Hockney Gallery at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery. She is currently experimenting with ways of curating with collections and involving communities.

Daniel Lowe

Daniel Lowe has been responsible for the British Library’s printed Arabic collections since 2015. Previously, he worked as an Arabic language specialist, cataloguing, researching and digitising India Office Records related to the Persian Gulf (1750-1950).

Shahed Saleem

Shahed Saleem

Shahed Saleem is an architect, author and academic at the University of Westminster. His writing, installations and architectural practice explore the architecture of migrants and diasporas, in particular their relationship to heritage and belonging.

Sofia Karim

Sofia Karim

Sofia Karim was a finalist for the Jameel Prize in 2021 for the Turbine Bagh project. This is a UK based platform for political art and activism, focusing on human rights in India and Bangladesh. Her workshop involves making samosa packets highlighting current issues whilst chatting and drinking chai.

Sorya Syed

Sorya Syed

Soraya Syed is a classically trained calligrapher and artist of film, dance, VR, and three-dimensional sculptures. Her practice is driven by an endless fascination with the Arabic script and its intoxicating versatility and depth of meaning.
