What does the future of gardening look like in an era of climate crisis, urban inequality, and shifting notions of land and community?
Inspired by Unearthed: The Power of Gardening, a landmark British Library exhibition and the accompanying Gardens of the Future book, this dynamic panel brings together growers, writers, artists and activists to explore gardening as a tool for resistance, healing and transformation.
From diasporic garden traditions to rewilding movements and community allotments, the conversation will explore how gardens challenge inequality, spark joy and cultivate new ways of living. Rooted in both history and lived experience, this is a celebration of gardening as radical, restorative practice.

Eelco Hooftman
Eelco Hooftman is a Dutch-born landscape architect, visiting professor at GSD, Harvard University and co-founder of GROSS. MAX. Landscape Architects, established in Edinburgh in 1995 alongside Bridget Baines. Hooftman studied landscape architecture at Wageningen University in the Netherlands and has significantly contributed to the field through both practice and academia.
The firm is recognised for its innovative and award-winning approach to public space design, merging a Dutch sense of experimentation, a German sense of rigour, and a British sense of humour.

Anna Liu
Anna Liu is a qualified architect with over 15 years of experience in architecture, art, and landscape. Born in Taiwan and raised in the United States. In 2002, she co-founded the architectural practice Tonkin Liu with Mike Tonkin. Their work explores patterns in nature and human nature, aiming to amplify sensory experiences and connect deeply with community identities. Anna has taught at institutions including the Architectural Association School of Architecture, University of Westminster, and universities in Japan and Taiwan. She is also a trustee of Open City, an organization dedicated to making architecture and the urban landscape more open, accessible, and equitable.
About the Chair

Peg Alexander
Peg Alexander is a Leeds based award winning broadcaster, presenter, and journalist across TV, radio, podcasts and events. A colourful, warm, optimistic northerner, she’s all about the world we live in and life in general – people, politics, the planet, and cake. She‘s a regular on shows including Jeremy Vine on 5 and previously Steph’s Packed Lunch, and is often heard on national radio putting her twopenneth in.
Broadcasting is her 2nd career. Before moving into the media she was a charity CEO and was senior in public policy. She was also founding Director of Bradford’s UNESCO status as the world’s first City of Film. She now combines both careers.
She’s written 2 books – one on how to keep weight off long term and is currently finishing a travel-inspired memoir.
