Perilous Intimacies: Debating Hindu-Muslim Friendship

Saeed Khan is a cultural historian and commentator based at Wayne State University in Detroit, where he teaches in the departments of History and Global Studies. His academic expertise includes Islamic and Middle Eastern history, Islamic political thought, and transnational identities. Alongside his academic work, he is a frequent analyst for international media outlets. Saeed is the founder of the Center for the Study of Trans-Atlantic Diasporas, a policy institute focused on ethnic and immigrant communities in North America and Europe.

SherAli Tareen is Professor of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College. His research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions and debates in early modern and modern South Asia. His book Defending Muhammad in Modernity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020) received the American Institute of Pakistan Studies 2020 Book Prize and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book Award. His second book is called Perilous Intimacies: Debating Hindu-Muslim Friendship after Empire (Columbia University Press, 2023).

Professor-Emeritus Iftikhar H. Malik, a trustee and fellow of the Royal Historical Society, taught modern history at Bath Spa University for 27 years, following a senior fellowship at St. Antony’s College, Oxford. He has been a visiting professor at numerous universities worldwide and is an MCR at Wolfson College, Oxford since 2003. Trained at Michigan State, Columbia, and UC Berkeley, he has published twenty-one books and numerous research papers on intellectual, political, and international history. His recent works include Curating Lived Islam in the Muslim World (2021) and the novel Pearls and Shards. He volunteers as a Trustee and Senior Librarian at the Oxford Union Society.
