Screening: Cake

Description

When their father is taken ill, two estranged sisters are drawn back together under the same roof. Zareen has remained in Karachi, carrying the responsibility of ageing parents and the family estate. Zara has made a new life in London. As the family reunites, affection and resentment collide, and long-held secrets begin to surface.

Written and directed by Asim Abbasi, and starring Aamina Sheikh, Sanam Saeed and Adnan Malik, Cake is a tender, sharply observed family drama about love, duty and the choices that shape us.

Pakistan’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, Cake became the first Pakistani film to premiere in London’s Leicester Square, with its cast later visiting Bradford as part of the UK promotional tour.

Warm, witty and quietly subversive, it remains a landmark of contemporary Pakistani cinema.

Runtime: 125 minutes.

Cake (2018) is in Urdu and Sindhi, with English subtitles.
