Beyond Sectarianism: Sunni, Shia and the Future

Description

For centuries, Sunni and Shi’a traditions have existed not only in tension, but also in dialogue, coexistence and shared intellectual and spiritual exchange. Yet in the modern era, political conflict, state rivalry and regional instability have increasingly hardened sectarian identities and deepened inherited divisions.

This conversation explores the historical, political and emotional forces that have shaped Sunni–Shi’a relations across the modern Muslim world, whilst asking whether new forms of coexistence, solidarity and shared future-building remain possible.

Moving beyond polemic and simplification, the discussion reflects on memory, identity, power and the challenge of imagining a future that does not remain trapped within inherited fracture.
