Doha Debates Portal: Are we the most intelligent beings in the universe?

Description

For centuries, humanity has understood itself as singular within the universe—uniquely intelligent, moral and spiritual. But what if that assumption is wrong?

The discovery of intelligent life beyond Earth would not just be a scientific breakthrough; it would force a profound reconsideration of what it means to be human. If we are not alone, are we still exceptional? Or does our place in the cosmos become less certain, less central?

This Portal debate will provide an opportunity for the Bradford Literature Festival attendees to engage with young people from Nigeria, and Brazil to explore how such a discovery might reshape our understanding of ourselves. Would it challenge the moral and spiritual frameworks that have guided civilizations for centuries, or would it deepen them?
