Lives that Shaped a City: Polish and Ukranian Stories in Bradford

Description

Photographer Tim Smith explores the deep connections between Poland, Ukraine and Britain through the communities that have shaped Bradford for over 70 years.

Following the Second World War, Bradford became home to significant Polish and Ukrainian populations, including one of the largest Ukrainian communities in Western Europe. Their churches, clubs and cultural organisations established strong foundations, with many descendants still living in the city today.

More recently, new arrivals from Poland following EU expansion, alongside those fleeing the war in Ukraine, have added new layers to this evolving story. Polish is now among the most widely spoken languages in the district.

Through photography and personal testimony, Tim brings these stories to life, highlighting the histories, identities and contributions of these communities.

This event invites audiences to reflect on Bradford’s changing social landscape and the enduring impact of migration on the city’s identity.
