Beyond Expectations: Poetry Mural by Nabeela Ahmed & The People Powered Press

Description

At four metres high, this letterpress printed mural features a new poem by Nabeela Ahmed, poet in residence at The People Powered Press, installed in the garden at Salts Works, Shipley, and visible from Saltaire Road.

Nabeela Ahmed is a Bradford-based writer, poet, and spoken word artist whose work moves across English, Pahari and Urdu, exploring themes of identity, belonging and resistance, shaped by her experiences as a British Muslim Kashmiri woman. She performed in the opening ceremony of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture and her debut collection, From Kashmir to Yorkshire, was published by Yaffle Press.

The People Powered Press, based at Salts Works, is home to the world’s largest letterpress printing press of its kind, creating giant hand-printed murals in collaboration with community groups from across Bradford, amplifying local voices and spreading words worth spreading.

The piece reflects on Bradford’s year of culture and on blessings that arrive beyond expectation and leave us quietly changed.
