Curry, Crown and Empire: An Illustrated Talk by Radhika Howarth

Description

Queen Victoria had a secret. She loved curry.

In the final decades of her reign, shaped by her close relationship with Abdul Karim, her Indian secretary and confidant, dishes like daal and chicken curry found their way into the royal kitchens at Osborne House. What those recipes reveal about Britain at the height of empire is more surprising than you might expect.

Drawing on historic menus and original research, Radhika Howarth traces how curry travelled from colonial encounter to royal dining table, from early curry powders to coronation chicken. Richly illustrated, warm and witty, this is food history at its most revealing.
