The Living Script: Soraya Syed on Arabic Calligraphy

Description

Join acclaimed artist and calligrapher Soraya Syed as she explores Arabic calligraphy from manuscript page to contemporary art. The first Briton to receive an ijazah from master Turkish calligraphers, Syed reflects on a living tradition that shaped the visual worlds of masterpieces such as Maqāmāt al-Harīrī and Kalīla wa Dimna. Featuring insights into her specially commissioned holographic work, currently exhibited as part of Global Perspectives and Islamic Calligraphy at Cartwright Hall, this event traces the Arabic script through heritage, spirituality, creativity, and innovation, revealing its continuing power to speak across language, culture, and time.
